Kim Ji-hoo, or @jeehoowism on Instagram, is a South Korean content creator who enjoys capturing dreamlike photos and videos with fantastical themes. Ji-hoo’s latest project, “Sleepwalking in a Dream”, features a series of reels with a girl wandering around Jeju Island in a nightgown, carrying a pillow and plush toy with her, giving the impression of dreaming in the vast outdoors.

Jeju Island holds a special place in Ji-hoo’s heart as it was the first place where he travelled solo. Its dreamy landscapes and wildlife left a deep impression on him and inspired the premise for this conceptual shoot. We spoke with Ji-hoo to learn more about his inspiration and how the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II helped capture his creative vision.

Despite being a telephoto lens, this lightweight lens allowed me to capture different compositions from various angles on the go."

Jeehoowism’s take on the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II

Due to the nature of his creative concept, Ji-hoo had to capture his videos handheld throughout the shoot. Even so, Ji-hoo was undaunted by the idea as the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II’s lightweight and compact body enabled him to move around flexibly while shooting from various angles. Its in-built image stabilisation feature also eliminated the bumps along the path he treaded while filming the videos.

3 Reel Questions

Besides portability, what else do you like most about the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II?

I like the huge improvements from the first-generation FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS, such as advancements in autofocus performance. It was convenient for me to capture footage from low angles without trouble focusing for long periods.

What’s your most memorable moment of filming this series of reels?

While filming in a field of horses, one took an interest in the pillow my model was holding. Fortunately, she was not afraid of horses and approached the horse in a friendly way. This spontaneous moment allowed me to film a tender scene of humans interacting with nature, and I was happy to have captured such a genuine, unstaged scene.

What are some things for beginners to note when shooting their first reel?

The first factor would be reimagining your world in a vertical layout. Reels can be challenging when you’re so used to shooting videos in a horizontal format, where the composition and sizes are different. My advice is to keep shooting in a vertical format so that you’ll get used to framing your shots. The next part would be syncing your video clips with the beat of your selected music track when editing to make your reel more fun to watch.

Words of encouragement

As reels dominate the internet, Ji-hoo plans to explore more ideas and collaborate with other creators to push his creative limits. Meanwhile, he encourages aspiring reel creators to keep honing their visual storytelling skills. “It’s crucial to grab your audience’s attention at first glance and communicate the story you want to tell within a short time frame, creating a more engaging narrative with immersive imagery.”
