Jason Lin, who goes by @__jjjason on Instagram, is a vlogger and freelance filmmaker from Taichung, Taiwan. He enjoys finding magic in everyday moments and turning the ordinary into aesthetically-pleasing scenes. Out of all the subjects and themes he has filmed before, he enjoys capturing romantic moments with his partner the most.

We spoke with Jason to find out how the FE 20-70mm F4 G helps with his Instagram Reel creation and creative process.

With a 20-70mm zoom range, the FE 20-70mm F4 G allows Jason to capture his artistic visions over various focal lengths – from up close, at a distance, or anywhere in between. Jason also likes the FE 20-70mm F4 G’s portable build, which forms a compact package with his Alpha 7 IV, making it an ideal combination for any shooting situation.

In his simple reel, Jason compiled scenes of himself and his partner sharing a quiet moment at home on a lazy weekend morning. Thanks to the FE 20-70mm F4 G’s zoom range, he could shoot carefully planned frames at different focal lengths, which he wove together to create a calming, cinematic mini-vlog. Furthermore, reduced focus breathing and axial shift minimise image shift when zooming for smooth imagery throughout the zoom range.

3 Reel Questions

How does shooting reels compare to 1080p videos?

When making reels, I like to make the aperture smaller to ensure the whole scene is focused, allowing my subject to blend well with their background. In a portrait frame, it is more challenging to fit a complete view of your surroundings, especially when shooting in a small space indoors. A 20mm focal length fits more of your surroundings in the frame for enhanced spaciousness.

With so many reels published on Instagram, how do you make your reels stand out?

I enjoy shooting footage that exudes a cinematographic flair. One of the few touches I like to add to my reels is close-ups of my subject’s expression. To do this, I must use a focal length of 70mm to get close to them. The closer I am, the more I can capture footage brimming with emotion, especially when I zoom into their eyes – the windows to the soul.

How else does the FE 20-70mm F4 G benefit you when filming reels?

When paired with the Alpha 7 IV, a wide focal length of 20mm makes camera shake less apparent, giving my viewers the impression that I used a tripod. This comes in handy for me as I shoot on the move regularly.

Words of encouragement

Jason believes filmed footage is the most true-to-life method of preserving memories, allowing you to capture precious moments as they unfold. “No matter if you’re a novice or a seasoned professional, capture what you love the most, and you will never find a lack of inspiration.”
