Creative inspirations, equipment selection

When photographing on travels, I try to capture stories - and do so by snapping aspects of a scene that have strong meaning and evoke emotions. This can mean capturing an entire scene or focusing on fine details either way, I'm always trying to simplify what's going on in the frame, so audiences can intuitively connect with the essence of the shot.

The lenses that accompany me on every trip are the FE 24mm F1.4 GM and the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS.

The zoom advantage

Why do I recommend the 24-105mm F4 G OSS Lens so highly? Besides being one of the most popular lenses among tourists, it's also a lens that offers incredible versatility and flexibility - making it simple to capture images on-the-go. Overall, it's a very easy lens to use, delivers great sharpness and has a solid maximum aperture.

A "one lens" solution that's perfect for travellers

While I absolutely love my prime lenses, if I had to travel with only one lens, then I'd have to choose my zoom lens for its versatility.

Alpha 7C | FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS | 24mm | F1.4 | 1/200 sec | ISO 2000

With constantly shifting surroundings and unpredictable scenarios - which are very common occurrences on travels - you'll find 24mm wide enough for more scenic spots and activities.

Alpha 7C | FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS | 24mm | F4 | 1/1000 sec | ISO 250

And when you push the 24-105mm F4 G OSS Lens to 105mm, you'll be able to capture all the fine details in your environment and subjects - hair, clothes and accessories on people, ripples in the still water, and all the intricacies of the animals, birds and insects you're snapping.

It's not always possible to change your lens, but you can always adjust your zoom

You'll also need to consider that in certain conditions, like rainy or dusty environments, it may not be possible to change your lens. And when capturing the "perfect shot" depends on how quickly you can change your lens, you'll wish you could simply use a zoom. Sometimes, all your get is "one shot, one opportunity".

A zoom lens is just fun

Perhaps more importantly, having a zoom lens that's as versatile as the 24-105mm F4 G OSS Lens will also allow you to simply enjoy the moment - instead of focusing on prepping the "perfect equipment" for your shot.

Bokeh, beautiful bokeh

Thanks to Sony's sensor technology and advanced ISO capabilities, f/4 is a wide enough aperture for almost all kinds of travel photography. And one of my favourite bits of the 24-105mm F4 G OSS Lens is that all throughout its 24-105mm zoom range, the lens produces dreamy, gorgeous bokeh.

Besides adding a layer of depth and storytelling to the scene, the bokeh also helps greatly with separating subjects from busy backgrounds - an effect you'll notice very prominently with portraits.

Precise, quiet and fast AF

It's obvious how the 24-105mm F4 G OSS Lens earned its coveted "G Master" title. Its autofocus is accurate, fast and completely quiet, and its resolution and quality is remarkable.

The joy of travelling with my favourite lenses

To me, travel photography is all about embracing "change". That's because whenever you're travelling - and wherever you're travelling to - your surroundings are constantly changing. As a visitor and photographer, you are there to experience new things, and to test all of your senses.

That's why I always pack my favourite prime and zoom lenses with me on trips. They make travelling - and photographing all the memorable moments I encounter on my travels - so much more enjoyable.
